mixing business with pleasure

They say "Do what you love, and you'll never work another day in your life".  While I don't think that's quite how it works, work does become more enjoyable when you are passionate about what you do or the industry you're in.

Over 5 years ago, the company I was working for decided to close it's North American operations.  That turn of events lead me down a crazy path of work for 2 of our sister companies, turning a co-worker into a best friend-who I don't know what I'd do without, a few months of consulting-which allowed me to afford 8 weddings in less than one year, and finally-landing a job with a company in the marine industry. After all the years that I've spent on the water growing up, this opportunity felt just like I was mixing business with pleasure.  I've done things, I've ever only dreamt of.

I've..

  • been a part of a team that launched an industry first and led the events surrounding it
  • travelled to places I've only ever dreamed of- most recently Spain
  • met many influential people from the industry
  • seen an around the world sailing race up close
  • sailed an M32 catamaran
  • sea trialed boats - large, small, fast and slow
  • spent more time on the water
  • made numerous friends who have become family
  • helped others make memories on the water

There are countless other things I can list and maybe many of the reasons above are nothing to boast about, but for me they are all things that tie back to something near and dear to my heart...  time on the water.  So while mixing business with pleasure isn't always ideal, I think this time it was a match made in heaven.
